Celebrating 35 Years of Service to Women & Girls in Washington County
Delegate Brenda J. Thiam, PhD. is from North Carolina. She obtained her high school diploma and received her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. She earned her master’s degree from University of Maryland (College Park) and her doctorate degree from Capella University. She received her post doctorate graduate certificate from Pennsylvania State University where she completed the course work in applied behavior analysis.
On September of 2020, Delegate Thiam was selected by the Washington County Republican Central Committee to represent District 2B. She was sworn in on October 6, 2020 by Speaker Jones as the first African American woman to be appointed in the Maryland General Assembly in the Republican Caucus. She serves on the judiciary committee as well as a leadership role in the women’s caucus.
Delegate Thiam is married to Malick Thiam and they have one daughter. Delegate Thiam has volunteered in various capacities in the community to include president of the Washington County Commission for Women, mentored for Girls Inc., and many roles in her church (Zion Baptist in Hagerstown). She also served as the vice president of the Washington County Republican Club. She volunteers with the Washington County Department of Aging and Partners in Care.
Dr. Thiam is a member of the Frederick County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She’s currently a member of the Maryland Black Republican Council and the Maryland Federation of Republican Women. Her favorite scripture is from John 15:7, which states, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” Go boldly to God with your prayers and wait expectantly for him to answer.
Del. Thiam has been a member of the House of Delegates since October 6, 2020. She serves on the Judiciary Committee, Family & Juvenile Law Subcommittee, the Public Safety Subcommittee, the Women Legislators of Maryland, and the Executive Board at Large.
